Steps you can take to prevent septic issues in your home

Preventing Septic Tank Issues

Problems with the septic tank in your home can become both complicated and frustrating quickly. These problems can cause your sinks to back up, they can create unpleasant smells or odors within your home, and these problems can even cause water to soak your lawn or yard. These issues can also force you to have to stop using certain rooms, sinks, or showers within your home while you wait for these problems to get fixed properly.

What many people don’t realize is that these issues can be prevented in the first place. There are a few easy and simple preventative steps that you can take to help stop any septic issues before they truly become much larger problems for you.

Some of these steps include:

●       Try to not use a lot of water at once. If you use a lot of water all at one time, it can overwhelm your septic system, which can then cause problems later on for your system.

●       Have your septic tank pumped regularly. Having your septic tank pumped regularly, which is about every three to five years, can help keep your system running as it should. Regular maintenance is key to preventing problems with your system later on.

●       Don’t put things in the disposal that don’t belong there. Items such as coffee grounds, paper towels, etc., can cause your garbage disposal to clog or back up, which can be a major issue for your entire septic system.

●       Replace older appliances when needed. Older appliances such as toilets, sinks, or dishwashers can become less efficient with age. By upgrading to newer appliances, you can be sure that your septic system will continue to work as it should.

●       Avoid dumping harmful chemicals into your septic system. Harmful household chemicals, such as cleaning supplies, can definitely impact your septic system. Keep your septic system healthy by not pouring chemicals down the drain.

●       Try to avoid using the garbage disposal. Using your garbage disposal frequently can definitely impact your septic system. Of course, it is ok to use the disposal sometimes, but using it regularly could cause future problems down the road.

By taking these preventative measures, you can help protect your septic system and help increase the lifespan of your septic system.
